Did Rāma Break Śiva’s Pināka Bow?
A Śaiva refutation using Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Śiva Purāṇa, Mahābhārata and Padma Purāṇa
The claim that Rāma broke Pināka is tested against the actual scriptural references.
Rama breaking the bow discussion
The bow broken by Rāma is examined through scriptural references.

Introduction

The Vaishnavas claims that Sri Ram broke Lord Śiva's Pīnaka bow, and therefore Vishnu is superior to Śiva.

But the counter-point is simple: the name "Pīnaka" is not mentioned anywhere in the Valmiki Ramayana.

For proper clarity, we can refer directly to:

Valmiki Ramayana; Bala Kand; Sarga 75:

Oh Ramā, Your Valour Is Bruited As A Sensational Valour, And Sensation Is Your Breaking Of Śiva Dhanush.

Now the natural question is which bow did Ramā actually break?

Valmiki Ramayana; Bal Kanda; Sarga 75; Verse 12:
अनिसृष्ठं सुरैरेकं त्र्यम्बकाय युयुत्सवे ।
त्रिपुरघ्नं नस्श्रेष्ठ भन्नं काकुत्स्थ यत्त्वया || १-७५-१२

O Best Among Men, Parameshwara Śiva Used This Very Bow In The Battle Against Tripurasura And Destroyed That Asura. And You Alone Have Broken That Same Bow.

The verse straightforwardly states that Parameshwara Śiva used this exact bow during the Tripurasura combat, and that Rama later broke the same bow.

So, the next logical step is to identify which bow Śiva used during the destruction of Tripurasura.

Shiv Puran; Rudra Samhita; Yuddha Kanda, Chapter 8:

The Mandarachala Mountain Became Shiva's Bow, And Vasuki Served As The Bowstring. The Radiant Vishnu Took The Form Of The Arrow, And Agni Became The Fiery Tip Of That Arrow. 25-26

In the Shiva Purana, during the battle with Tripurasura, it is clearly stated that Shiva did not use the Pinaka bow. Instead, the bow was formed from the Mandarachala mountain, with Vasuki serving as the bowstring.

Some References From Mahabharat:
Mahabharata - Vana Parva; Kirata Parva; Chapter 39; Verses 37 and 41:
मुहूर्तं शरवर्षं तत् प्रतिगृह्य पिनाकधृक् ।
अक्षतेन शरीरेण तस्थौ गिरिरिवाचलः ।। ३७ ।।
न हि मद्वाणजालानामुत्सृष्टानां सहस्रशः ।
शक्तोऽन्यः सहितुं वेगमृते देवं पिनाकिनम् ।। ४१ ।।

Shiva, The Wielder Of The Pinaka, Absorbed Every Single Arrow Arjuna Released Within Moments. Despite The Relentless Attack, He Stood Absolutely Unmoved Like A Mountain Without A Single Wound On His Body.

Arjuna Said: The Kind Of Arrow-storm 1 Unleashed On The Kirata, No One Except Parameshwara Shiva, Rudra, The Bearer Of The Pinaka Could Have Endured It!

Mahabharata – Vana Parva; Kirata Parva; Chapter 39; Verses 1 and 2:
गतेषु तेषु सर्वेषु तपस्विषु महात्मसु ।
पिनाकपाणिर्भगवान् सर्वपापहरो हरः ॥ १ ॥
कैरातं वेषमास्थाय काञ्चनद्द्रुमसंनिभम् ।
विभ्राजमानो विपुलो गिरिर्मेरुरिवापरः ।। २ ।।

Vaishampayan Rishi Said, O Janmajaya, When The Great Ascthetic Left The Place, the All Pervasive Lord, The Beholder Of Pinaka, Shankara (shiva) Appeared In The Form Of Kirata Who Was Blazing With Beauty.1,2 Here From Mahabharat It Is Mentioned That Shiva Came With Pinaka In Hand In Form Of Kirata Murthy To Test Arjuna. This Incident Had Happened In Dwapar Yug Hence, Rama Breaking Pinaka Is Itself Refuted As If Rama Had Broked Pinaka Bow In Treta Yug Then, Parameshwara Shiva Wouldn't Have Pinaka In Dwapar Yug.

If the bow Rama broke was the same boW Shiva used in the Tripurasura battle, and that bow was NOT Pinaka, then the obvious question is: What was that bow called?

Padma Puran, Patal Khand, Chapter 116:

In the Padma Purana (Vaishnav Purana), it is explicitly stated that the bow broken by Rama during Sita's swayamvara was the Ajagava bow, not the Pinaka. Therefore, calling the bow that Rama broke "Pinaka" is inaccurate and reflects a bias or even outright Shiva-droh (hatred toward Shiva) on the part of some Vaishnavas.

Vaishnavas claim that in Bhavishya Puran, Pratisarga parva 4.12.38-43 it is mentioned that “Shiva hold Pinak bow in was beautifully decorated when lord Shiva pulled the string of that great bow.”

Quoting Bhavishya Puran, that too it's Pratisarga parva makes no sense. Every historian has rejected the Pratisarga Parva of Bhavishya Puran by calling it highly interpolated. Therefore Quoting Bhavishya Puran makes no sense.

Conclusion

The argument that Rama broke Shiva’s Pinaka bow and therefore Vishnu is superior to Shiva collapses when the actual references are checked. The Valmiki Ramayana does not name the bow as Pinaka. It identifies the broken bow as the bow used by Shiva in Tripurasura battle. Shiva Purana describes that Tripura bow as Mandarachala, with Vasuki as the bowstring, not Pinaka.

Mahabharata further shows Shiva as Pinakadhṛk and Pinakapāṇi in Dwapara Yuga. Therefore, the crude claim that Rama broke Pinaka in Treta Yuga is not a proper śāstric reading. Padma Purana also identifies the bow broken by Rama as Ajagava, not Pinaka.

Thus, the Vaishnava claim built on the word “Pinaka” is exposed as a forced sectarian reading, not a sound scriptural conclusion.

Rāma broke the bow used in Tripura-saṃhāra; the claim that it was Pināka is not supported by Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa.
