Introduction

Many people don't know the truth about the Mahīṣāsura Mardinī Stotram. Some say it was created by Ādi Śaṅkarācārya, and some say it was created by Tenali Rama. But none of them created it.

This stotram is not an independent later composition. It is totally authenticated by Śāstra itself, and that too from Śiva Rahasya Mahētihāsa. It is not merely from Purāṇas, but from a Mahētihāsa itself.

The popular version available now on the internet is not the real śāstric version. It has no proper śāstra-pramāṇa in that altered form, because it is interpolated from the real Mahīṣāsura Mardinī Stotram that is present in Śiva Rahasya Mahētihāsa.

Smārtas and Vaiṣṇavas have wrongly taken real stotrams from śāstras and claimed them for someone else, especially for their own ācāryas, without giving the proper credit to the real Śāstra. This must be strongly condemned, because hiding the śāstric source and replacing it with sectarian attribution is a serious distortion of truth.

Main Discussion

The real reading is not “Viṣṇu Vilāsinī.” There is no such valid reading here. The correct śāstric reading is “Śambhū Vilāsinī.”

The very next verse says “Sitikantha Kutumbini.” This clearly refers to Mā Pārvatī as the eternal consort of Śiva. When the very next verse identifies her in relation to Śitikaṇṭha, how can “Viṣṇu Vilāsinī” come there? It makes no śāstric sense.

This is a clear example of interpolation and sectarian manipulation. Smārta interpreters, because of their Hari-Hara-vāda tendency, changed “Śambhū Vilāsinī” into “Viṣṇu Vilāsinī” and tried to dilute the Śaiva meaning of the stotram.

They also changed “Viṣṇu-nute” into “Jiṣṇu-nute.” This is another unacceptable alteration.

“Viṣṇu-nute” means Viṣṇu bows down to Mā Pārvatī and praises her. But because they could not digest this meaning, they changed it into “Jiṣṇu-nute,” making it refer to Indra instead. This is not honest śāstric handling. It is a forced change made to escape the original Śaiva meaning.

Now let us come to Vaiṣṇava hypocrisy. Vaiṣṇavas use “Viṣṇu Vilāsinī” to show Durgā as related to Viṣṇu, either as his consort or as the one who gives pleasure to Viṣṇu. Some even translate it as “she gives pleasure to Viṣṇu.” This is completely against the immediate context.

The very next verse says “Sitikantha Kutumbini,” meaning Śiva’s eternal consort. Therefore, “Viṣṇu Vilāsinī” is clearly an interpolation, or at most it can only be forcefully explained as the Goddess playing with Viṣṇu as a sister. But in the śāstric context, that line is not the real reading. The real reading is “Śambhū Vilāsinī.”
